The municipality of Leposavić was formed in the early 1970s from the former municipalities of Lesak, Leposavić and Ibarska Slatina. It has 7 local communities, 72 villages, with about 4,818 households with a population of about 14,262 inhabitants.
The city of Leposavić is located in the Ibar Valley, 35 km north of Kosovska Mitrovica. The city’s altitude is between 445 and 500 m. The city of Leposavić has about 5,568 inhabitants. Until 1991, the backbone of all urban industrialization programs was mining, more precisely the DP “Kopaonik” operating within the complex system of RMHK “Trepča”. The timber industry occupies a significant place in the municipality, which is understandable, given that the forest fund makes up half of the total land fund at the disposal of the municipality. The forests of this region enable the production of 2,960 m3 of technical wood, 5,600 m3 of firewood and other space wood and 330 m3 of forest timber.
The leaders of the metal industry are “PPT – Zglobni lezajevi” and FMD “Ivo Lola Ribar” and a large number of small entrepreneurs.
Agriculture has always been the main activity of the inhabitants of this region. However, the conditions for agricultural production are very modest. The development of agricultural production would be improved by activating agricultural cooperatives and purchasing stations for agricultural products, which would then be sold to factories for their further processing.
Since 1999, in addition to the Institute of Serbian Culture in Pristina, the faculties of the University of Pristina have also been relocated to Leposavić: the Faculty of Teacher Training in Prizren, the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports, the Faculty of Agriculture, and vocational schools: the Higher School of Business and Vocational Studies in Peja and the Higher Technical School in Ferizaj.
